Abstract

The possible role of lysosomal enzymes in adenovirus uncoating has been investigated. Lysosomes were isolated from guinea pig liver, and a total lysosomal extract was in vitro assayed on adenovirus particles and its structural antigens. Adenovirus capsid and morphological subunits were insensitive to lysosomal enzymes. These results suggest that the factor responsible for adenovirus uncoating is not located within lysosomes and support the assumption by other investigators that this uncoating process occurs in close vicinity to the plasma membrane.
