Abstract

ABSTRACT The occurrence of multiple electron sources in electron emission systems was investigated for thermionic filamentary cathodes in the form of a straight wire, of a hairpin and of a helical spiral. The experimental results are all consistent with the view that the occurrence of multiple sources is the result of standing electron space charge oscillations close to the cathode surface. The frequencies of these oscillations are believed to be between 108 and 109 c/s.
