Abstract
Honeybee Robotics in partnership with mPower Technology have developed the Lunar Array, Mast, and Power System (LAMPS), a groundbreaking vertical solar array system for power provision at the Lunar Poles. The system makes use of high strength-to-weight ratio deployable technology, dust tolerant mechanisms and electrical connectors, flight actuators and avionics based on Honeybee’s current Lunar missions, as well as flexible, mass-efficient solar panels developed by mPower. For this development effort, key components of LAMPS were tested extensively in a dirty thermal vacuum chamber and deployed under adverse conditions to determine utility in extreme environments. Simulations were performed to analyze performance under Lunar conditions. A study was conducted on integration potential for LAMPS in future Lunar missions.
