Abstract
A study has been made of the changes in the spectrum and decay time of O - 2 luminescence in KBr caused by the application of 〈100〉 uniaxial stress at 2 K. Weak zero-phonon lines of the extra series in the luminescence spectra are remarkably enhanced by the application of the stress, while strong lines of the ordinary series become weaker. The enhanced extra lines are found to be accompanied by double-structure phonon side bands. The decay time of the extra lines is found to be 96 ± 1 ns, while that of the ordinary lines is 92 ± 1 ns. The results obtained show that the extra and ordinary lines originate from different centers, that is, the former from 〈110〉 and the latter from 〈111〉 centers. It is concluded that the double-structure side bands are caused by the crystal field splitting of the ground state of O - 2 centers which have D 2h symmetry.
