Abstract

Optical properties of a CsI crystal doped with Eu 2+ ions are investigated by absorption, emission and excitation spectroscopy. Two absorption bands with a fine structure are observed at 277 and 363 nm, and an emission band is observed at 445 nm. These bands are caused by the electronic transition between 4f 7 and 4f 65d configurations. The crystal field parameter 10 Dq of Eu 2+ in CsI is estimated to be 8600 cm −1. Comparison with the results obtained in other alkali halides is made.
