Abstract

This paper addresses Materiality and Context by introducing Lumifoil, a design-build intervention in the Red Generator; an iconic work of contemporary architecture designed by architect Bernard Tschumi for The Florida International University School of Architecture. This paper explore the engagement of context through the design of computational processes and material manipulation. The proposition that context only exists as something to respond to is critically questioned. Emerging from rigorous, parametrically controlled design-processes, form, material, surface and finish – as semi-autonomous yet entangled conditions – are used to variegate, meet, and enhance the conceptual and physical contexts of Tschumi’s project while transforming and expanding them. Lumifoil is an exercise in re-engaging, remaking contexts through the formal and material intervention of a place. Upon completion, Lumifoil will yield conceptual, material, formal, structural, and programmatic effects through an analysis of Tschumi’s building.
