Abstract
This paper deals with three German expressionist poems. In different ways they reveal the modern perplexity in regard to the vanishing of the last traces of bourgeois Humanism at the dawn of the twentieth century. It highlights the repeated (and remodelled) use of parataxis, heightening the exhibition of this process in the lyrical form as it was employed in Germany on the eve of World War I in contrast to the two preceding decades.

No texto de apresentação do livro, Pinthus caracteriza os poetas aí contemplados como gente que “[...] cedo sentiu como o homem afundava na Dämmerung [...], afundava na noite da ruína [...] para novamente emergir na Dämmerung iluminadora do novo dia [...]”, e prossegue dizendo que, no livro, “[...] o homem se volta conscientemente da Dämmerung do passado e do presente que o constrangem, oprimem e devoram [...]” e se dirige para “[...] a Dämmerung liberadora de um futuro que ele mesmo (o homem) cria” (Pinthus, 1964, p. 25)
O gesto que poupa o leitor da visualização de corpos afogados ou esmagados é irônico: na cena derradeira da história, descrevem-se com maior precisão e interesse as perdas materiais, assumindo o homem o papel de figura coadjuvante no processo que sela o fim de todas as coisas

This paper deals with three German expressionist poems. In different ways they reveal the modern perplexity in regard to the vanishing of the last traces of bourgeois Humanism at the dawn of the twentieth century. Introdução Em 1920, Kurt Pinthus lançava aquela que viria a ser a mais conhecida e citada antologia de poesia expressionista, a Menschheitsdämmerung, cujo título, como assinalou no prefácio, trazia a imagem contraditória de um ocaso e uma aurora simultâneos. Se Pinthus ressalta, no conjunto da obra do Expressionismo, a promessa de um novo despertar, essa esperança não é compartilhada por todos os poetas de uma geração que cedo foi surpreendida pela Primeira Guerra Mundial.
