Abstract

In this contribution, the impact dynamic response and energy dissipation mechanism of composite multilayer array structures are investigated and presented. The composite multilayer array structures in this paper comprise of three layers of composite solid ball elements between four layers of hybrid composite laminates. A fairly extensive experimental investigation are conducted in conjunction with a detailed finite element analysis. The experimental tests are conducted and the finite element analysis is carried out using a commercially available finite element software. The results of maximum contact force, contact duration and corresponding failure modes are presented, compared and discussed in this technical paper. Simulation and test results show that this new structure has good energy absorption efficiency and provides a new way for the design of underwater protective structure.
