Abstract
Approximately 10% of critically ill patients have a penicillin allergy label (PAL) in their chart at the time of a medical intensive care unit (MICU) admission.1 We previously tested a direct oral challenge with amoxicillin as a safe and effective delabeling strategy in a population of MICU patients with histories of low-risk penicillin allergy.2 Patients hospitalized in an MICU frequently have chronic illnesses that predisposes to infections, which increases their need and utilization of antibiotics.
