Abstract

Combined scanning and friction force microscopy was employed to study the low-load friction behavior of monolayers of C60 molecules grown epitaxially on GeS (001). While the friction forceFf on GeS was found to be proportional to the loadFl the C60 monolayers exhibit aFf ∞Fl2/3 dependence. As a result, an inversion of contrast in the friction force images with increasing applied load could be observed.
