Abstract

It is found that three sets of waves exist in the beam-plasma system, one of which has been investigated previously by VERMEER (see abstr. A27365 of 1970). The other two waves, the second ion cyclotron wave and the ion sound wave are now described. It is shown that for the first regime of the beam-plasma interaction the excitation mechanism in both cases is a coupling of the slow cyclotron wave on the beam with the plasma waves concerned. In the second regime the predominant excitation mechanism is a decay of the large amplitude electron plasma wave into another electron wave and an ion wave.
