Abstract

In this paper, we present a high beta model for the generation of low frequency (LF) fluctuations at the earth’s magnetopause. The source of free energy for the excitation of these LF waves is provided by the density and magnetic field gradients prevalent in the magnetopause boundary layer, as well as by the presence of shear flow. The model is based on the SS equations [Shukla and Stenflo, 1993 J. Exp. Theor. Phys. 57 692] for low-frequency EM waves in non-uniform high beta magnetoplasmas. We consider both the electrons and ions to have finite temperatures. Using a fluid theory approach we derive the dispersion relation which is then numerically solved for unstable modes in different regions of parameter space.
