Abstract
Abstract Private eyes are renowned for their masculine, silent nature, but they are not immune to music and its emotional instability. This article examines early score examples from film noir, which cement the traditional private eye's masculinity and illuminate the musical moments of vulnerability that break the detective's archetypal mold.
