Abstract

This paper discusses the results of a survey on various lossless and lossy image compression algorithms for on-board processing in spacecrafts. Three performance metrics are used to evaluate image compression algorithms and choose the most suitable one: compression ratio, computational requirements, and memory requirements. For evaluation of lossy compression algorithm, a fourth metric is also considered: transmission error susceptibility. Furthermore, a scenario involving spacecraft application of these algorithms is discussed. Alternative on-board processing architectures for such a spacecraft application are explored. >
