Abstract

This paper presents a description of propagation and losses for coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures using quasi - static analysis, based on the approximate conformal technique. The behaviour of attenuation losses in CPWs is studied for quasi planar transmission lines with constant characteristic impedance and resistivity, having different geometries. Minimisation of loss for a chosen substrate thickness, conductivity and characteristic impedance is analysed. Effective dielectric constant has also been computed for various coplanar waveguide structures. A sensitivity analysis for effective dielectric constant with respect to gap width, strip width and substrate height, is presented. Analytical formulations are presented for all calculations.
