Abstract

A classical treatment is given for the properties of a non-degenerate parametric amplifier with different damping coefficients for the signal and idler fields. The coupled equations are solved under the ‘undepleted pump’ approximation, and the effects of unequal damping are studied. We find that by increasing the loss of the idler relative to the signal both fields become more stabilized near threshold, and for large gain values both fields are amplified. An oscillation effect is obtained both for threshold and for high gain values when the loss of the signal is large relative to the idler.
