Abstract

Most people nowadays consider the elm growing on the village square as an indifferent tree, which may be useful or ornemental only. Tracing back the attitudes and feelings of the inhabitants towards this elm reveals a veneration, which can be felt well into the XXth Century, unconscious as it may have become. Like the oak in some regions as the Bask country, the elm of the public square is a descendant of the Sacred Tree of old.
