Abstract

Paying the deserved reward, also to the doctor There are several ways of financing health care and health care providers. Three experts, each with considerable experience in Belgian health care, reflect on the crucial questions and submit arguments to change the existing principles of paying the doctor. They make an inventory of basic keynotes and assumptions, and present an overview of the possible options. Finally, the authors opt for a modern system of mixed financing (fee-for-service and forfaitary payments), adapted to general practitioners and the several specialistic disciplines. In their conclusions, they suggest a spectrum of deducted possible financial decisions enabling the combination of the doctors’ deserved reward with options that could be important for the future Belgian health care.
