Abstract

Most of the HIV infected pregnant women in England and Wales will not discover this important information as part of their materniry care. In 1995-96, for every five pregnant women with HIV, only one knew her status before the baby’ birth (Unlinked Anonymous Surveys Steering Group (UASSG), 1997). Yet without knowledge of her HIV status, a woman is effectively denied the opportunity to consider actions and interventions to reduce the risk of infection to her baby and gain a better chance of understanding her own health.
