Abstract

Vol 350 • December 13, 1997 1783 prevalence of type-I hypersensitivity to latex potentiated by proteinpolysaccharide complexes with glove powder among health-care workers. Despite the concerns about powdered surgical gloves and the availability of powder-free gloves, powdered gloves are still widely used. For example, the percentage of use of powdered surgical gloves for operative procedures in the USA is 86% and ranges from 15% (the UK) to 90% (France) in Europe. A new European and US standard is urgently needed that requires manufacturers to produce a safe alternative free of powder and high levels of extractable latex proteins.
