Abstract

The loss in silica optical fibers has been greatly reduced in the 1-1.6μm wavelength range. Long-wavelength lasers in this wavelength range have been extensively studied for several years.1 This paper reviews the recent progress on long wavelength lasers, stressing, in particular, InGaAsP/lnP lasers. Transverse mode control by the builtin lateral refractive index is a key factor in improving the characteristics of InGaAsP lasers.2-7 Fundamental transverse mode oscillation was observed up to 160 mW.6 Beam spreading was 10-20° in the horizontal plane and 30-50° in the vertical plane. A threshold current of 10 mA was obtained.8
