Abstract

The lathyrogen, beta aminopropionitrile, was given to pathogen-free rats over most of their lifespans in an attempt to inhibit aging. No increase in longevity was attained. High doses for the first year of life caused an irreversible stunting of growth. High doses for a shorter period had a delayed effect, manifested by weight loss late in life. Lathyrogen-treated male rats had a decreased incidence of benign tumors.
