Abstract

A single silastic implant-D containing 40 mg of norethindrone acetate was administered to 876 women who were followed up over a period of 3975 woman-months. The analysis of data using the life-table method has shown pregnancy rates of 2.3 and 3.9 at the end of 7 and 8 months, respectively. Removal rate for medical reasons was 5.7, for personal reasons was 1.2 and for planning pregnancy 0.6 with a net termination rate of 13.6 per 100 users at the end of 8 months. The continuation rate for the same time was 86.4 per 100 women. This study reveals that the single implant-D has a very high retention rate. In view of its efficacy, high continuation rate and few side effects, implant-D has been found to be an acceptable contraceptive method in women for long-term contraception.
