Abstract

In a recent discussion of the syntax of Logical Form (LF) in Navajo (Barss, Hale, Perkins and Speas 1986, hereafter BHPS) data was given which indicated that the general transformational rule Move-Alpha (Chomsky 1981, 1986), applying at that level of linguistic representation (with some exceptions, cf. Schauber 1979), was subject to certain constraints. Specifically, it appears, the rule cannot apply in such a way that the associated movement “crosses” certain barriers, the most prominent of which is the configuration arising from a prior application of the same rule. In short, some principle blocks extraction of two constituents from the same “domain.”KeywordsLogical FormNoun PhraseRelative ClauseQuestion WordFocus ParticleThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
