Abstract

Molar volume has been determined on the liquid STe system using a high energy gamma ray attenuation method. Overall dependence on temperature and concentration of the volume is quite similar to that reported for the liquid SeTe system. However anomalous behaviour was observed for S 40Te 60. The volume irregularly decreases around 680° C and recovers again around 740° C to the value extrapolated from the low temperatures, where a meniscus appears in the alloy. It has been found that the two liquids phase boundary is closed. The appearance of the lower and upper critical solution temperatures is discussed in relation to the structural change and the non-metal-metal transition in the liquid S, SeTe mixtures.
