Abstract
Rabbit iris-ciliary body preparations, retina, cornea, liver and heart, were incubated in a solution containing [ 3H]prostaglandin E 1. The uptake of prostaglandin E 1 was monitored with the tissue/medium ratio, and was found to be significantly higher in the ciliary body-iris preparation than in the other tissues. The uptake was also monitored morphologically with a specially adapted autoradiographic procedure, which proved to give negligible diffusion or extraction artefacts. Significant radioactivity appeared only in the stroma of the ciliary processes, with little activity in the ciliary epithelium or intracellularly in any other cells. It is presumed that the eiliary erocesses remove prostaglandin E 1 from the interior of the eye.
