Abstract
Subunit III of beef heart cytochrome c oxidase (E.C.1.9.3.1) contains two cysteines, one of which, cysteine 115, reacts with iodoacetamide and thionitrobenzoate-modified yeast cytochrome c. This cytochrome c derivative has been shown to interact with cytochrome c oxidase in the high affinity site for substrate on the C domain of the oxidase complex. This places cysteine 115 on the C side of the mitochrondrial inner membrane.
