Abstract

1. 1. Gill hemogenates of Carcinus maenas were centrifuged at 100,000 g. Pellets and supernatants were analyzed for carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity. Approximately 70% of total CA activity occurred in a bound form, the rest being cytosolic. 2. 2. Repeated hemogenization and sonication prior to recentrifugation did not result in additional liberation of CA from the bound state. 3. 3. Centrifugation of a 7500 g pellet in a sucrose density gradiant provided evidence that the bound form of CA is present in plasma membranes.
