Abstract

Evidence is accumulating that the idea of local public health units is receiving favorable attention in an ever-widening circle. This idea is expressed as Point 6 in the 12-point program of the American Medical Association for the advancement of medicine and public health, reading as follows: Establishment of local public health units and services and incorporation in health centers and local public health units of such services as communicable disease control, vital statistics, environmental sanitation, control of venereal diseases, maternal and child hygiene and public health laboratory services. Remuneration of health officials commensurate with their responsibility. A recent release by the National Health Council indicates that a number of states are making substantial progress in the establishment and expansion of local health unit services.
