Abstract

The paper is focussed on the role of migrant languages as a new source of innovation in youth communicative practices and analyses the communicative practices of young Albanian Immigrants in Italy. The theoretical framework of style, advanced by Irvine (2001) and, in particular of social communicative style, as it was applied by Keim (2007) in her ethnographic study on Turkische powergirls, provides a valuable model for integrating semiotic and linguistic data gathered during fieldwork reserach–video recordings of spontaneous interactions at a youth centre–and for considering how ethnicity, age and gender come into play and acquire meaning in discourse.
