Abstract

Case reports are presented on 3 surgical-emergency patients (age range, 79–81 years) in whom the risk of general anesthesia was considered excessive. Local anesthesia was used in the performance of a gastric resection, gastro-jejunostomy and tube-gastrostomy respectively. Each patient made a good recovery after operation. Surgeons and other physicians dealing with the elderly should not forget local anethesia when considering major surgical procedures in certain seriously ill aged patients.
