L'Émergence Des Écritures Migrantes Et Métisses Au Québec

Abstract

In an important study (1986) conducted for Canada's Secretary of State, Ronald Sutherland presents a highly informative balance sheet on the diversity in French language literary production by writers from communities in francophone regions of Canada. In subsequent studies, Pierre Nepveu (1988) and Berrouet-Oriol (1987) have also examined the contributions of immigrant writers to the development and dynamism of contemporary Quebec literature. Nepveu analyzes the text in terms of current notions of transculture and cultural metissage, which are borne out in the cultural and scriptorial polyphony of contemporary urban Quebec. With respect to recent literary production, the authors of this essay ask: what precisely are the distinctive traits that confirm the emergence of migrant and multiethnic writings in francophone Canada and especially in Quebec?
