Abstract

Shiism and Sunnism constitute the thickest rings of halo that formed around Islam. This situation carries two tendencies in question beyond the clas-sical classification of sects, thus requires to deal with the subject in a broader level. Above all, Shiism and Sunnism are symbolical concepts. As for symbols, they help to build up meanings more than expressing them, therefore they allow for those who use them to produce new meanings. This situation carries Shiism and Sunnism to a slippery ground and raises a problem of perspective. Problem is not what is seen when looked at past, but how to look at past. Content of this paper focuses on the very this problem and aims at providing an essay of perspective as to how to look at sects or new eligious formations, in particular at Shiism-Sunnism identities and relationships.
