Abstract
This article considers how R.B. Kitaj incorporated visualizations of the industrial revolution into his work. It also attempts a reconstruction of his work for Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Art and Technology Program. The work he produced there, a multi-media installation called Lives of the Engineers, was his most direct evocation of the industrial revolution. Much of this work is now lost but an excavation of the remaining written and photographic evidence reveals the work was a meditation on the industrial revolution and that certain key images resurfaced in his later work.
