Abstract

The article dwells upon the history of the urban project “Linear City”, which subsequently had a serious impact on the theory of urban planning throughout the world. It also analyzes the reasons for its occurrence and the main ideas that were implemented by its author, Arturo Soria, a Spanish engineer and entrepreneur. A detailed chronology of the project, initial success during its implementation, difficulties are revealed. The article analyzes potential causes that led to a distortion of the project’s basic principles, a complete halt of its development, subsequent degradation and final collapse. Today only a subway station called the Linear City and the main street bearing the name of its author recalls the Linear City of Madrid that was once located there. Most of the research materials are first presented in Russian, and some of the materials are published for the first time in the scientific literature.
