Abstract
Abstract The article focuses on the evaluation of current situation of Lithuanian wetlands and determination of their significance among other ecosystems. It presents statistical data on Lithuanian wetlands and their changes in recent decades. Lithuania has not got a special law for the protection of wetlands though some legal measures for their protection are provided by other laws and enactments on environmental protection. The article considers the current policy of wetland protection in Lithuania, indicating the main strategic documents in this respect, management problems, dangers to resident wildlife and optimal measures for conservation of this valuable ecosystem. It also accentuates the significance of wetlands for the protection of rare and endangered bird species of the Red Data Book of Lithuania.
