Abstract

The fatty acid and lipid composition of different parts of the thallus of the brown algaSargassum miyabei was studied. The upper and lower thallus regions markedly differed in amounts ofn-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), monoenoic fatty acids, phospholipids, and glycolipids. The lower thallus regions were rich in monoenoic fatty acids and phospholipids, while the upper parts had higher levels ofn-3 PUFAs and glycolipids.
