Abstract

The present research brings a literature review of the main aspects of hepatic lipidosis on the Amazona aestiva species, also known as the blue-fronted Amazon parrot, increasing its popularity as an animal companion in recent years. This review addresses the liver physiology, and essential aspects of the parrot’s nutrition. It focuses on the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of fatty liver disease, an extremely common condition in the avian clinic, which still creates doubt for the veterinarian. Although usual in other domestic species, the pathogenesis is still poorly understood. More investigation and studies about fatty liver syndrome are required, which happens a lot in these species. Unfortunately, the literature still lacks precise data, making diagnosis and treatment of affected patients more challenging.
