Abstract

This statement, made by a sixth grade student at the conclusion of her working on a performance-based mathematics activity, captures an important feature of such an activity—that it is a realistic problem which holds meaning within the student's under standing of the world. Rather than math ematics problems being presented as small-size, isolated (why this?) type of exercises, high quality performance activi ties require the students to use their ma thematic skills and knowledge in a larger, applied real-life context. The activity completed by this sixth grader is part of the PACKETSTM Program for Middle School Mathematics, a research based performance assessment program cur rently under developmentby the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
