Abstract

The purpose of this article is threefold: to reveal how a disease that afflicts many critical care patients can be the impetus for forging into a research career; to illustrate a program of research undertaken by a nurse investigator to answer a critical care nursing question using genetic technology; and to identify exciting opportunities for research training, career development, and investigator-initiated research activities for the advanced practice critical care nurse at the National Institute of Nursing Research. The article concludes by identifying future linkages between nursing research and genetics.
