Abstract

Previous works on the “analysis of passive mixer-first receivers” studied the effect of mixer switch non-idealities on the linearity and noise figure (NF) of the receiver. In this work, the impact of baseband trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) on the linearity and NF of an N-path mixer-first receiver with input match is studied in detail. It is shown that based on the choice of feedback resistance and transconductance values used in the shunt-feedback TIA, an N-path mixer-first receiver can operate in one of the two possible regimes of operation: either in a noise-limited regime or in a linearity-limited regime. The receivers designed to operate in the noise-limited regime will have a good inband (IB) input referred third-order intercept power (IIP3) but poor NF, and vice-versa. Design examples and simulation results are presented as a means of verification.
