Abstract

We report theoretical studies of linear wave vector dependent effects on the optical properties of semi-infinite crystals. We have used a model for Λ 3 symmetry modes in crystals of D 3 symmetry (e.g. α-quartz, tellurium, HgS) for illustration, and we present results for examples of modes corresponding to phonons and excitons. The trigonal crystal axis is assumed to be perpendicular to the plane surface bounding it. We discuss the influences of spatial dispersion on the reflectivity at normal and non-normal incidence, on the dispersion relation for surface polaritons propagating along a crystal-vacuum interface, and on the attenuated total reflection spectrum of these surface polaritons.
