Abstract

Fe/f.c.c. metal (Cu, Ag, Au, and Pd) multilayers are prepared by alternate vapour deposition. The magnetization and microstructure are measured and characterized by various methods. The experimental results indicate that the maximum magnetic moment enhancement per Fe atom in Fe/f.c.c. multilayers increases linearly with decreasing difference of the covalent radii of the constituent metals. The size effect on the magnetic moment enhancement is discussed in terms of the metastable configuration of Fe atoms at the Fe/f.c.c. metal interfaces.
