Abstract

ABSTRACT The limitations for an emulsion/sol/gel process were established by mixing a concentrated aqueous solution of aluminum nitrate with silicon tetraethoxide. The mixture was vigorously stirred until a homogeneous solution was obtained. Gelation was observed at room temperature and at 60°C. The reaction was followed by NMR spectroscopy, which showed the hydrolysis reaction to be finished and the condensation initiated when the transparent solution was formed. The subsequent gelation gave the final cross-coupling to form the silica network. The aluminum ions did not participate in the silica condensation.
