Abstract
It has been found that a net uptake of Na + and Cl − occurs when Chlorella cells are placed in the light. The magnitude of the intracellular levels and the kinetics of the tracer uptakes were similar for both ions. Removal of external Cl − in the presence of other anions inhibited the Na + uptake. The results are interpreted as a light-induced accumulation of NaCl within a cytoplasmic compartment which is tentatively suggested to be the chloroplasts.
