Abstract

The author discusses a gauge-fixing procedure in Witten's covariant open bosonic string field theory (1986) that involves the elimination of the unphysical degrees of freedom. The resulting tree-level effective action resembles the light-cone string field theory action. In particular, for on-shell states he obtains the joining and splitting picture of string interactions, as well as the four-point vertex of Kaku and Kikkawa (1974).
