Abstract

A ligand field theory is developed to analyze the stress-induced optical and magnetic properties of deep impurity centers in covalent crystals. A detailed analysis is given for the orbit-lattice coupling coefficients and the spin-lattice coupling coefficients for the optical states and the fundamental state of Mn in ZnS and ZnSe. It is shown that the most striking covalency effects are due to the spin-orbit interaction for the p electrons of the ligands.
