Abstract

The effect of ultrahigh pressure on the lifetime τ of 2E→ 4A 2 (the R1 line) of ruby was considered. Rapid increase of τ with increase of pressure (up to 1200 kbar) is theoretically predicted. The increase of τ was explained with the help of a procedure used earlier to model the lifetime increase with low pressure (up to 120 kbar), and also with a precisely determined spectral shift of the R1 line and of the refractive index n. Good agreement was found between the predicted and measured τ.
