Abstract

AbstractThis chapter explores the potential connections between representations of tourism in UK women's 'lifestyle' magazines and body imagery. In theorizing the discussion of the links between tourism and body imagery, the chapter draws on the work of Foucault on the power-knowledge-sexuality triplex and the power of the collective social gaze. The discussion centres on topics relating to the creation of what is often referred to in the magazines as a 'beach body' or a 'bikini body'. Three key themes of female bodily representation are identified: the homogenized beach body; the sexualized 'beach babe/beach beauty' body; and the disciplined (bikini boot camp) body.
