Abstract
The internet provides the opportunity for many web-based systems to be developed for specific business and service purposes. However, the support for this type of system is challenging due to the uncertainty of user requirements and dynamic operating conditions. This paper reviews four web-based systems which were developed to integrate intelligent backend systems to provide user support services including business risk assessment, manufacturing processes, targeted operations and maintenance information over the internet. These case studies identified several key lifecycle support requirements of web-based services. To develop and sustain web-based service, an enterprise architecture approach known as 3PE is introduced to provide the basis for designing and modifying the ITC environment and operating structure of the service system. The methodology is illustrated by an application to modelling a wharf cartage system in its current form as well as being the benchmark for making future improvements.
